Healthcare PR:

Satoris, Inc., a California-based molecular diagnostics company, announced today that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent Office for claims relating to the use of specific blood biomarkers as an aid in diagnosing Alzheimer's disease.

"We are very pleased to have received this Notice of Allowance, said Cris McReynolds, President and CEO of Satoris. "It represents an important validation by the Patent Office of our novel approach of using plasma signaling proteins for the detection of a complex neurological disease process such as Alzheimer's. We expect this to be the first in a series of patents covering the use of such biomarker panels in diagnosing Alzheimer's and potentially other neurodegenerative diseases."

The potential utility of Alzheimer-related biomarkers was first reported in the November 2007 issue of the scientific journal Nature Medicine. Satoris has recently launched a testing service for two Alzheimer biomarker panels and a dementia discrimination panel for research use. The tests are expected to be valuable tools for researchers involved in Alzheimer's disease characterization and in the development and validation of treatment methods. Satoris' ultimate goal is a clinical diagnostic test, following the necessary regulatory clearance.

The Patent Application is entitled "Methods for Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease in Blood Samples."

About Alzheimer's Disease
There is no cure for Alzheimer's, a degenerative brain disease that affects an estimated 5.3 million people in the U.S. and over 26 million worldwide. Experts predict the toll may more than triple by 2050 as the population grays. Since its destructive effects may exist years before symptoms are apparent, significant damage can occur prior to diagnosis. Also, Alzheimer's diagnosis is costly and largely dependent on the expertise of the physician. As a result, it is estimated that only 60 percent of cases are diagnosed, leaving over 1.5 million patients undiagnosed.

About Satoris
