Most pet owners understand that heartworm disease is very dangerous for dogs. But the illness is also deadly for cats. BrandStar’s The Balancing Act TV show on Lifetime Television presents Dr. Lynn Buzhardt, a veterinarian for 29 years, on location at the Coral Springs Animal Hospital in South Florida. She discusses how a test created by IDEXX Laboratories can diagnose and treat heartworm and two other common feline illnesses. “Cats are wonderful pets, but they don’t get the same level of medical care as dogs,” she says. “Cats are experts at hiding most of their symptoms, making it difficult for pet owners to know when they are sick.”
Unchecked, feline heartworm disease can cause serious damage to the cat’s lungs and result in significant breathing problems, and even death. “Some cats may show no symptoms at all – which is why annual examinations are so important,” she explains.
The best news is that feline heartworm disease is almost 100 percent preventable. “If your cat is at least seven months old, your veterinarian will use the new SNAP Feline Triple Test developed by IDEXX to assess your cat’s heartworm status and check for two other viral diseases,” Dr. Buzhardt notes.
The veterinarian can prescribe a simple, easy-to-administer monthly medication to prevent heartworm.
“Learning more about diseases like feline heartworm can help you take better care of your cat so he or she can have a long and happy life,” Dr. Buzhardt says.
